Growing up, I was always the creative one in my family. I would make pencil holders and picture frames out of random things around the house. As I got close in to my teenage years, I would "borrow" pieces of clothing from my mother's closet and alter them so that they looked like they were from the current decade.

However, as I grew older and started making money like a grownup, I left my creativeness behind when I realized I would much rather pay for something already made and have it then and there, rather than having to go through all of the trouble of making it. 

It wasn't until two months ago when I was reading Vogue and saw a beautiful and ornate clutch. The price? Only $1,234. As I began to really look at the clutch, I realized that you could actually make an exact replica and save yourself a couple of grand! 

"Why would I buy something that I can make?" said Geremy Scott, a regular customer of Michael's Craft Store. 

"It saves me a ton of money and it is also very fun. I love DIY!" he implies.

Browsing through some DIY (do it yourself) blogs, I came across a DIY project that happened to be exactly on the clutch I saw in Vogue! Talk about mind blown!

DIY projects are a fun and cheap way of creating things that costs about triple the amount elsewhere. You basically get inspiration from the original work and replicate it, using your own style of course! Not only can you create new things, but you can also update any old garment and make it unique and to your liking!

Can We Go Thrift Shopping?

Whether we take Macklemore's song, "Thrift Shop" seriously or not, thrift shopping (or "thrifting") has left it's negative image of unwanted and outdated clothes to something that is fun and super savvy to do.

Thrifting itself sound really intriguing. You hunt down through endless racks of clothing to find that one piece that speaks to you and shows you its history in every detailed seam. 

Unfortunately, that is not me when I enter thrift shops.

If you are like me, then you probably already know what I am referring to. 

It is that feeling of being overwhelmed by the infinite rows of clothing, not knowing where to begin. So with no luck (and a slight feeling of shock), I make my way out of the thrift shop and sans my special piece of vintage.

In order to change my views about thrift stores, I decided to contact Jen Yoo, a junior at George Mason University and an avid thrifter.

"Before you go inside a thirft shop, you need to have a plan. You need to figure out what exactly it is that you want and go directly there," Yoo states.

"If you don't, then you get really overwhelmed with the thousands and thousands of clothes you have to look through."

Boy, was she right. Two hours later and a break in-between, I popped my thrift store cherry and fell in love with a beautiful tweed coat. And yes, it's vintage ;)

Simple, But With A Twist

Trust me when I say that I will be the first person to admit that one of the best feelings in the world is slipping into your favorite pair of blue jeans and a simple white t-shirt. Am I right? No hassle, super classic, and extremely comfortable. It's like wearing your oldest pair of pj's just because it feels great, it's comfortable, it molds perfectly to your body...ah.

But in all reality, who wants to wear just a pair of jeans and a t-shirt? More importantly, who has TIME for just a pair of jeans and a t-shirt? We currently live in a society where we are constantly on the go and we are under the impression that no one has time to be comfortable and look good a the same time. 

Well my friends, we are all wrong.

You don't need to sacrifice style for comfort or comfort for style! You can all have your cake and eat it too! All with the help of accessories.

Olivia Palermo, a New York City socialite and street style 'IT' girl once stated, "accessories make the outfit."

"You can mix and match different metals with patterns and they will still make any outfit better."

Take the blue jeans and white t-shirt picture on top, for example. Super simple, and nothing special. However, it all changes when you add a few accessories. Simply by adding a necklace here and a bracelet there, you create an outfit and you go from super casual to stylish casual. This works perfectly for the everyday woman because you can go from a casual day at the office to a shopping date with your friends. Also, by mixing and matching different accessories, you can create tons of fun outfits without having to buy separate shirts to go with what you wanted to wear. 

Look fabulous, from day to night. All without sacrificing style ;)

When Life Hands You Lemons...

There is that famous saying, "when life hands you lemons, make lemonade". Well, on the gloomy days where I am just drooling over every fashion show, dreaming about the beautiful pieces that I will never be able to afford, I use that saying as a form of inspiration to recreate runway looks. And yes, by that I mean over-the-top-and-impossible-to-obtain runway looks.

Often times, when we look at runway, we think of the looks as something only the designer can provide. We then get all depressed because we feel that the only way we'll be able to afford that beautiful Balmain look is to either a) win the lottery, or b) marry a rich man. However, life doesn't work like that. 

From shopping in your mother's closet, your very own, or even in the nearest Target, you too can recreate runway looks without breaking the bank! If you are like me and have tons of clothes in your closet, you will have no trouble mixing and matching different pieces of clothing to replicate designers' looks.

"We get a lot of people in after New York Fashion Week," states Jessica Miller, who has been working at H&M for nearly 3 years.

 "They come in looking to see if they can find items of clothing or accessories that look like the ones designers had in their fashion shows."

In the two pictures above, I tried to replicate the looks of both Oscar de la Renta and Balmain. Using key pieces that one can find in budget-friendly stores, you can recreate the designers' pieces without breaking the bank and making the most of what you can :)

Chic on a Dime

As I am browsing through one of my favorite stores in the eclectic area of Fairfax Corner, I spot what I believe was a true calling from the heavens. There it was. This beautiful white dress with the most elaborate placed gemstones, just there for me to look at. I swear, I think I heard heavenly harps play.

Without hesitating it one minute, I dashed into the store’s dressing room, eager to figure out how it would look like on. Needless to say, it felt as if I was being hugged by the softest materials imaginable and it literally fit like a glove. It was beautiful! It was silky! It was $300?!?!

Being a college student and unable to afford the over-the-top  price tag, I was devastated that the beautiful dress would never be mine. So, without looking back, I headed to the nearest Zara store, in hopes of finding a similar dress. 

Stores such as TJ Maxx, H&M, Target, Forever 21 and Zara are meccas for college students and women on a budget everywhere. They replicate designer looks and sell them at prices hard to resist. That dress that was too expensive for me to buy? I bough almost an exact replica at Zara for less than double the price. 

It is not only the low prices that attracts avid TJ Maxx shopper, Mackenzie Zeffe to TJ Maxx, but also the authenticity of the designer goods they sell. 

"I can get the same stuff people get at boutiques at TJ Maxx," states Zeefe. "It's only a season off, but I'd rather get it late than pay double it's price."

Or as it was in my case, triple the price. My decision to shop at these college-friendly stores not only saved me from a life without the perfect dress, but it also saved my bank account as well :)
